I may have answered my own question below, but would like any input from those that have more knowledge than I.

My 650 will not spin the starter when hooked up normally. I get major clicking from the Starter Relay. It is definitely the relay that is clicking.

1. So, I removed the starter and tried it with the stock wiring and using a heavy gauge wire from body of starter to ground - same results.
2. Took starter apart and cleaned everything, put it back together and tried again thru same procedure as 1. - Same results.
3. Used another piece of heavy gauge wire and ran power directly to the starter - spins up fine.
4. Used Ohm meter and tested continuity thru the power wire that comes from the relay to the starter - seems fine.
5. Used Volt meter to test voltage coming thru that power wire - with key on, pressed starter button and power never got above 4.5 volts thru the line, and the relay clicked like mad.
6. Checked power at point where it goes into the relay - solid 12.5 volts going in.

So, the only thing I can think is the relay is somehow bad. Which seems odd as it will click over.

Is the starter relay a known issue on these bikes?

I see lots of different brands of relays available on EBay. Has anyone had experience with any of the after market ones, or should I just get one from Yamahahaha?

Anyway, any input would be appreciated.

I don't know how common that problem is on the 650 but your starter relay is bad. I'd get an OEM replacement. Some of those aftermarket relays are nothing but cheap junk. You may get lucky or you may end up buying another one 6 months from now.

So, was sick for past week. Finally got to the local Yamaha dealer this morning and checked out the price for a replacement starter relay. DAMN!!! I thought my old BMW was expensive for parts. Over $60 for the relay and I have to wait 7-10 days for it to arrive.

As I had already spent some time checking the Internet, I know I can get one online for $20 delivered to my door in the same amount of time. So, I took the old one out and checked it for who makes it and to see if there is a part number. No name on it, but has the exact same markings as a few off them on EBay that are listed for $10.50. Ordered one and will see how it works. I bet it comes from the same factory as the OEM, somewhere in either China or Korea.

Yamaha is not going to make that kind of money off me.

I am just curious, did the cheap online relay workout for you?
