I just looked in the manual, split the outer case remove the clutch just to get to it. I wouldn't be afraid to do it, but I've been a licensed mechanic for 25 yrs. What's your skillset like, requires a couple of special tools. A sheave wrench, probably could get by with a strap wrench and a clutch holder tool to break nut free, in gear-brake on-impact. You can get all the help and support you need here. Why the change, Upgrade or outage?

Yeah, agree with Fulltilt1, for the novice or average rider it would be a real job! I do wonder if the stator is really bad? Do you know that for sure? For a 2000 I would not think that, but it does happen. Smell your oil, if it smells burnt(electric type) you are probably correct.

You don't need to remove the clutch at all. The clutch is housed on the right transmission side. The stator is located inside the left engine sidecover, adjacent to the crankshaft. Not a difficult job but what is the purpose? Is the charging system output faulty causing a good battery to discharge? Are you having an ignition spark problem? Are you confident it has been properly diagnosed to failure of the stator? You need to be sure as the cost of a new stator could be up there. It's easy to diagnose if you have a reasonably accurate ohm meter? Please advise and I'll be happy to walk you through it.

Good call Cheese. I was lookin at it on my phone this morning the engine was shown from both sides in opposite directions. Just got to look at it on a big screen. Once you see the "big" picture it's clear I must've seen the starter "clutch".

i have 2000 vstar 1100 custom and just had the voltage reg/rectifier go out and killed my less than one year old batter. the bike shop said if they had to replace stator it would have been significantly more expensive, but they said stator failures are a bit rare
