my xvs1100 classic has decided it don't like me no more and has started to try running on 1 cylinder. (the rear cylinder works). checked the fuses, changed the plugs, replaced the ignition coil, all to no avail. so i decided to check the resistance on the pick up coil (this is where it gets interesting). the Yamaha service manual says (pick up coil resistance 189~231 ohms @ 20.c) set tester to ohms X 100. my tester has a ohms lower limit of 200, but the weird part is when i check it with the tester i get a flash of numbers (continuity) then the numbers disappear like there is a break in the wiring (no continuity). i haven't as yet pulled the coils out of the engine, but am thinking this is going to be a yank and send away for rewiring. your thoughts please people as this one has me tottally stumped. thank you in advance for the responses. Greg:(

I'm no expert with electrics but can't continuity be affected by heat? So something can show good continuity when stone cold but break down when warm. Maybe this is something to do with your strange readings?

Hopefully this will prevent you from having to get it rewired, i'm 99% sure this would be much much cheaper..

if you'd like a long story short pass the first paragraph lol

Let me also start by saying I am no mechanical expert, but your problem sounds like one I had with my V Star.. ran fine one day, the next only one cylinder is kickin, tried eveything that would typically cause the problem and nothing fixed it so i called a mechanic buddy of mine and he came over with his voltage tester, we started at the coils where unfortunately I dont know exactly what he saw but he quickly explained that he was getting weird readings off of my coils but they were similar to each other, still it was very odd so i purchased new coils and installed them only to have no change in my problem.

So I began to backtrack and follow the wires that were giving weird readings and i traced them back to a little black box that I soon found out was my CDI Ignition Box, I looked up how much they cost and just bought one used on ebay from someone close who thankfully agreed to meet up with me to give me the part. i replaced the box and fired up my baby, she ran great both cylinders firing.

I have talked to some people since and have learned that they just kinda crap out sometimes.. Obviously I cant promise that this is your issue as well but when i read your problem I had flashbacks of my issues so its probably something you want to look into..

I can help you more if your interested, im sure theres a way to test the box without just buying a new one.. but i paid about 60 or so for mine on ebay
