I have a preference for the BrakeAway brand. It is one of the more expensive ones, but it is the only one that I've found that will disengage when you grab the brake lever. I've used one on a Suzuki Burgman, a Harley Heritage, and I have but haven't installed yet, one for my Stratoliner.
My very first wreck was two weeks after I got my motorcycle license. I hadn't yet learned everything I needed to and got caught with target fixation. I kept my eyes on the object I was about to hit, while pulling on the brake lever and keeping the throttle open. The bike doesn't stop to well while you keep the go switch engaged. Target fixation works just as advertised. I hit right where I was looking.
I had one of those and I "lost" what I think of as a "set screw" and it "locked" on. I had it installed by my local Yamaha dealer which might explain everything.
