So when I bought my Roadie, the dealership put new tires on her. They said to break them in but didn't specify what that meant. So my question to my brothers and sisters out there is: how do you know if your tires are broken in? Is it mileage? Is it texture on the tire? Thanks in advance.

Not entirely a myth. The myth is that the mold releasing agent (used by only a few manufacturers these days) is the primary reason for the "break in".

Think of it like a baseball glove. New gloves suck and become better and better with age. Tires aren't nearly as dramatically changed, but the break in period is when any real defects are going to be noticed as the vulcanized rubber is tested, the rubber and plies get stressed and become pliant with each other, tread develops the micro-surface necessary for road compliance, etc.

I live on a gravel road. It is over two miles to the nearest pavement. I make a point of riding through some of the deeper gravel piles (carefully) and figure about two trips will scrub off anything that might be on the tires.
