My husband and I are about to enter the Star family. We were on a Sportster, but needed/wanted something a bit more substantial. I've always liked the Stars and we're finding a number of bikes that we really like ... price is becoming one of the deciding factors (because they're all pretty great). There is a bike that I really like the look of and has everything we need for now (sissy bar, comfy seat for me, hard saddle bags). The big issue for us with this bike are the miles ... 64k on a '98.

Might not be a lot necessarily for the year, but our hope is that we won't have to buy a new bike or make a major change to it for at least 3 years, preferably 5. How long can the Royal Star run with routine maintenance? We will probably be riding it about 1k miles/month on average. Is taking it to 100k miles within 3 yrs of owning it pushing it?

Thanks!

No such thing

As long as it's been properly maintained, 64k is nothing for a 98. These bikes are very reliable and when taken care of will go a long way. We have 31k on our 02 1100 Silverado, and I like to think it's barely broken in :).

Don, thanks! 64k might be okay, but what about at 100k? My husband is just out of the Army and will probably spend the next 4 years in school before working full time again. I'm lucky to be able to stay home and do a few odd jobs from home, but until he goes back to work full time, neither of us want to expect to need a new bike. We are near family for the first time in 6 years, so we can ride with much more freedom. I can see us riding for a couple hundred miles every week.

At 100k would you expect to be pouring some money into your Silverado or looking for the next one? Also, I was born and raised in WI ... not missing the winter right now!

Wow that looks nice! We're going between the royal star and a road star with 15k miles. We'll need a sissy bar right away and a highway bar on the roadstar and it's 3.5 hrs away. The owner of the royal made some nasty comments to my husband about his time in service, but I'm practical about a good deal and not too excited about a long drive. We'll see, though. I'm itchy to be riding again!

Thanks for the help!

Pouring, no. Maintenance, yes. I have a lot of confidence in Yamaha motorcycles. My first bike was an 83 Virago 500 that I rode for 25 years with nothing more than routine maintenance, and it never let me down.

I don't imagine so, it pretty much sucks :(. If you're somewhere warmer than here, I'm jealous.

Jerk. Maybe he should remember that he's able to own that Star and have the freedom to ride because of the service and sacrifices your husband, my father, my son-in-law, our families, and thousands of others have made for this great country . Sorry, lack of respect for our service men and women irks me.

Whatever you guys decide to do, welcome back to the riding world. It sure is an awesome place! :D

There have been several mentions of Silverados. Silverados are not Royal Stars. They are good bikes but will not last like V4-water cooled Royal Star engine..

The royal star V4 engine is a great engine and will lierally last almost forever with routine maintenace such as oil changes, valve adjustments and carb cleaning. Yes unfortunately they still have carbs and there is 4 of them.

Royal Star's are great bikes. Like others have said they have the liquid cooled V4 motor with shaft drive. It is a great motor and if taken care of I would not be surprised to see 200k miles out of it.

I've spent quite a bit of my time doing personnal research investigating which bikes last longer (before engine overhaul) and i was starting to see the Royal Stars with the V4 engine taking a STRONG first place. I believe all of you have confirmed was i was thinking. I'm glad i read this thread:)

I know this is an old thread......but just found it and has helped a LOT. My wife and i are looking to upgrade to a larger bike from our V Star 650 and found a '96 Royal Star with a really good price. Our largest concern was the mileage as it has 136K on it now. Wife is still concerned, though i am a lot less concerned thanks to all the input on the dependability of the engine. We have recently joined amazing organization that helps abused kids.....and I just couldnt handle letting one of them down by not showing up when i said i would because my bike quit.
I think, in my mind anyway, I'm gonna have a Royal Star real soon lol ;)

Dude, you DO NOT want a Royal Star. That's alot of miles for one, and for two they feel insanely heavy, especially when turning. Trust me, it'll get old really

Of course it's insanely heavy.....its a 1300 V4. Im expecting that. Plus, from what ive read in this thread (and elsewhere) the mileage is nothing compared to their longevity. I appreciate your opinion however.

He's offering it for $1500
at that price if you can get another 5000 miles on it, its a break even deal.

The biggest expense might be the tires - see how much tread is left, or if he knows how many miles are on them.

The next most expensive thing you might need would be brake rotors - surprisingly expensive when they wear out.

The average cost for driving a car is about 50 cents a mile. If you can pull off 30 cents a mile on a motorcycle you are doing good.

If you can do your own maintenance and minor repairs, all the better.

I dont know why Shaun is stuck on the weight of the bike - maybe he ran over his foot with one?

If you are riding two up with gear in the bags, sometimes you need a big bike - also some people are 'big' people and need a big ride - nothing wrong with that.

If I find a good deal on a Royal Star, Id grab it , or a VS 1300, or an FJR1300....

Thanks KCW , I kinda thought so too. I paid that for my 650 and was happy about it. We do a LOT of two up, and with a combined 410lbs (+/-), we definitely need to step up.
As far as maintenance, I can do some....plus there are a few in our group that are bike mechanics :)
And the bike already has new tires on it :)

Welcome to the forum from NC!

If you get a service shop manual that will turn you into a mechanic pretty quick ) With help of awesome members of this forum you're going to be ok maintaining your bike. When I buy a bike that's the first "upgrade" I get - service manual. Saves a lot of money and provides a confidence that what needed to be done actually gets done. If you are able to read, follow the instructions in the manual and has a good set of tools and a garage you can re-build the whole bike IMO.
