I picked up a V-Star 650 Classic / Silverado last week as my first bike, and am having a blast with it. However, I'm wondering if there is a trick to getting into the tool compartment, as the lock is located such that I cannot get the key into it due to the passenger floorboard being in the way. I had to remove the rear bolt of floorboard to open the compartment and (unfortunately) confirm that the original tools were not there.

As I'm writing this, I'm wondering if the problem might be the aftermarket brand key that came with the bike. Maybe that's longer than the original key?

Regardless, I'd like to be able to use this storage area, so any thoughts? I guess I'll keep a wrench handy for the floorboard.

Don't be too disappointed the original tools aren't there. The tools that come with bikes really aren't all that great.

You might be able to change out the lock with a different non locking latch.

Passenger floorboards probably ARE in the way. The 650 Classics come stock with boards for the driver, but they still have pegs for the passenger.

As someone else said, you're not missing much. I've got the kit and it's like a couple common wrenches at 10, 12, 14, 17mm, 2 or 3 various allen keys. A double-sided phillips/regular screwdriver, and wrench for your sparkplugs. The only specific tool is the one for adjusting the shock setting, but you can do that with a big channel lock wrench.

The tool kit was with my 1100 when I bought it. I actually tried using the spark plug socket the other day (I was in a well equipped community garage but I had never used the tool kit so I figured "what the heck"). I fiddled with those tools for about 3 mins and gave up in disgust. Other than the allen keys, I plan on replacing pretty much the entire set with quality road tools.
