I have a 2000 V Star 1100 that's hard to start. I have replaced the plugs, made sure the fuel valve is set to open, have gas in the tank, battery is fully charged, the air cleaner is not dirty, checked the valve clearance and they are in spec. When I go to start the bike, sometimes it will crank and try to fire, and fire back, like the timing is to far advanced, but will not start. Next time I try and start the bike, it fires right up and runs fine. Last time it would not start, I pulled the plugs and they were wet with gas, so the plugs are getting gas. Does anyone have any experience with this problem and a solution?

How would I check it to see if it is good? I replaced the battery and the hard starting begin. I am wondering if the battery I put in the bike is not powerful enough, and has just enough power to turn bike over, but not enough to run the ignition system when I try and start the bike, making it hard to start.

If I'm reading your posting correctly, the starting issues started after the new battery was installed. I'd put a charger on the battery, and then check all connections. Could be something as silly as a loose ground.

Dont give it any throttle movement when starting. There is a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and it will advance the timing and you could do damage to the Starter Clutch/Starter thru bolts. Are you using the Enrichener (most call it a choke)? On these carbs there is no choke butterfly only an extra gas path to enrichen the mixture. Pull both plugs dry them off put them both in the plug wires and ground them. Turn the starter over and see if you are getting spark.

I had the same thing happen to my 06 1100. found out it was the rear cam timing had slipped. Found this out after the starter clutch failed $880 repair. Pull out the timing plug on the left hand case, Pull off the timing chain covers on the heads and make sure the marks are lined up.

My cam issue was only consitent in the fact it did it the first start of the day afer sitting out in the cold all night. I had thought it was the battery, but a new one did not help. I am not saying that this is what is wrong but it might lend some investigation, when all else fails. Starter clutch repairs are expen$ive.
