The service shops says that there are at least two things that VStar 650 owners will have to deal with: 1) a neutral switch oil leak and 2) your pickup coil of the stator going bad.

I had to get the plastic neutral switch and O-ring replaced on my 2009 VStar 650 with almost 5400 miles to fix a small but persistent oil leak.

What is the deal with this plastic part going out and when will Yamaha make a better one? Was my 5400 mileage about average for this leak? I hope not cuz who wants to deal with this frequently?

yes it is a problem

I had to replace my 1st one at 5500 miles.
The switch began to disintegrate , replaced, began leaking after another 2000 miles, removed, made gasket, applied small amount of sealer, worked for another 2500 miles.
Ordered another, I am on my 3rd now, I buy them from Boats.net Neutral safety switch part # 93210-29196-00 O-Ring, switch pert # 1L9-82540-00-00 .
My mechanic told me it was plastic material switch is made from does not like synthetic oil.
If you replace, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE SCREWS!!!!!!
I can change one out in less than 30 minutes.
Takes longer to carefully make the gasket.

Goodness Gracious OldMan,

I was hoping the lifetime was going to be longer than about 5000 miles. Thanks for letting me in on your experiences. Congrats on putting 40K miles on your VStar.

Yamaha, are you listening? You need to make a more durable plastic switch.

My 650 started this leak while put up for the winter last year (winter of '12-'13). It had about 11000 miles on it and was 2 and a half yrs old. I had taken the dust cover off it after about two months of sitting and there was a small puddle of oil on the garage floor. I was like WTH?? Once I figured out what it was I calmed down. Anyway, once the weather got back up into the 40's and warmer it stopped leaking and I never did fix it all last riding season (didn't leak at all). Well, like I figured since I put the bike away for winter this past Nov. it's leaking again. I AM going to fix it when the weather warms. Too cold right now to be doing anything in the garage! I thought it would leak while put away in the cold so I put a thick piece of cardboard under it. It now has a big oil stain on it and there is oil on the bottom of the bike's frame behind the kick stand. Looks like a super easy fix but really does seem like Yamaha should have figured out how to stop this from happening so often.
