What's with all the skulls?

3945 Views 60 Replies 35 Participants Last post by  Wind Jammer
Any body besides me think it's downright silly how much skulls are associated with the cruiser community? I've seen posers dressed in skull t-shirts and jackets and wearing skull jewelry and skulls adorning motorcycle tanks, seats and you name it. When I see grown men dressing up with skulls all over I sometimes am stifling a laugh at them trying to look 'bad ass' and scary.

I think skulls on motorcycles are an extremely overdone trope and I wonder how many guys thinking they look intimidating are actually viewed by people like me as looking like overgrown kids trying to be scary.

I've been around some genuinely scary bikers and I don't recall any of them wearing skulls (lots of prison tattoos though) so when I see skulls I think 'poser trying to be scary'.

Thoughts?

I'm glad that I am not the only one that thinks skull adornment is ... okay I will be nice and just say ... overdone.

I feel the same way about the Monster drink claw scratches, and all the HD stuff for that matter. If companies want me to do their advertising for them, I expect a nice kickback in a pay envelope.

I really don't much care how people decorate their bikes. Just kind of laugh at all of the people that put the same crap on their bikes as everyone else to be "different". One thing I was glad to see go away was when all of the Gold Wing owners were putting every light they could fit on them. As for me, I prefer as little decoration and chrome on my bikes as possible. I cant stand chrome. But, it's my choice. Just like skulls are others choice.

I agree with Bill about the HD crap. Back in 2005, when I bought my Harley, everyone I knew thought for some reason that it was necessary for me to have every piece of Harley crap that there is. Not just for the bike. T-shirts, belt buckles, towels, hats etc. I also have a Yamaha, a GMC, a Volkswagen, and a 1950 Pontiac, yet nobody feels the need to decorate my house in anything related to any of that.

I like the attitude, and I'm not talking about the topic of this thread in particular. If more people weren't so concerned about what other people thought of them (surprise for those people, those others aren't thinking about you as much as you think they are), it could go a long way to settling down society.
I agree that people need to have less thin skins. I personally typically couldn't care less of what others think of me and that goes back all the way to my teens, when everyone was trying to be accepted. All this isn't to say that I'm so closed minded as to think I can't improve or be more self-aware to faults if they are presented to me in a respectful manner.

The entire post topic was out of boredom, not any expectation that grown men are going give up skulls if they like them. I was mostly curious if anyone else thought they were overdone with the biker culture.

I also think flames are way overdone and 'tired' but that's another topic.

You sure do say an awful lot about yourself for someone who doesn't care what others think.

I wear a skull everyday. It keeps my skin off my brain and holds my brain in place. I have really grown attached to it.

Wait a minute, you don’t have a bunch of Pontiac stuff at your house? I haven’t owned my Pontiac (1970 Firebird with a 455) in almost 18 years and I still have Pontiac stuff at the house, metal garage signs, shirts etc. Damn, can’t believe it’s been almost 18 years since I sold it!

I don't have to impress anyone but me .
I completely agree. That said, I absolutely do not impress myself with skulls. (I did when I was 12, but that was 50 years ago.)

how does my bike fit in? i have an actual black bear skull as my coil cover, and the paint job makes the tins look like bone.

given that, i agree that skulls and flames are overdone. at some point people decided that these were the toughest things you could put on a bike, and decades later the sentiment still hasn't changed for some reason. isn't that why people put them on? to look tough? a skull can't hurt nobody. it's a dead thing. you wanna put something tough on your bike, why not a mongoose? those things can kill cobras. or mosquitos. mosquitos are the deadliest living creatures on Earth by killing over 1 million people every year.

Yep. There would also be a lot fewer de-badged Japanese cruisers. 😁
I have skulls all over my Harley.
It's Willy G themed. I bought it that way only because the PO had it decked out with skulls.
I did add a few more pieces though.

I'm not a 'biker' or member of any 'culture' where inclusion comes from purchasing something. There is so much darkness in the world that I can't understand glorifying it with symbols like skulls and fire. (Unless it's monster truck Gravedigger. He gets a pass.)

Instead of skulls, consider a cute gerbil 🐹 or perhaps an umbrella.🌂

Boog, I'd give you a swift kick in the butt but I don't want to hurt your gerbil.

Seriously folks, he's Boog, I'm Paulie and we'll be here all week for your entertainment. Table three, your pizza is ready.

Seeing skulls as 'darkness' is a matter of perspective. If a skull symbolizes death, my philosophy embraces death as part of life. I don't want to live forever so one of these days death is going be more than welcome to cross my doorstep. I've lived long enough to have seen loved ones die that I was glad death shined its light on them (they were suffering).

I suppose what death means to each of us is an entirely different post though....

Let’s face it, anything can be overdone. Flames,Skulls, Chrome, you name it. When I was 26, I thought flames were cool, at 66, I think flames are outdated and expensive.
Speaking of skulls, they have a different meaning altogether to me. They’re part of a crime scene when you have to put the skull with the correct shoulder joint, etc.
I’ve seen some cool skulls airbrushed on custom vehicles, I’ve seen some cool airbrushed flames as well, but they’re just not my preference. I like the murdered out look on certain bikes, speaking of skulls and flames, and I can’t wait to see Bevo’s bike upon completion. Now I prefer the toned down, clean and well placed, mixture of chrome and smooth paint look. I’m trying to achieve that look on my RoadStar. I’m not trying to impress anyone but me, but I respect the difference in our choices.
