I'm just changing the tires and tubes on my 650 V-Star classic and the rubber rim strips I received are about half the width of the oem strips which are in good shape.

Is there any reason not to leave the oem rim strip and apply the new one right over it as a precaution against the tube being punctured by a spoke????

Are the newer rim strips wide enough to cover the spoke nipples? Are the older ones dry rotted? Basically I'd use one or the other, no sense in putting something new over something that may fail soon. As for rim strips, their only purpose is to prevent spoke nipples from rubbing into the tube... if you have spoke ends poking through the spoke nipples, I would file those flush. I personally am not a fan of using ill fitting or old rim strips... I'd prefer using readily available alternatives like a good thick-skinned tape with high quality adhesive. But then I converted to tubeless much to the chagrin of several members of this forum.

If the new strip is narrower than the space it sits in, I would be worried about it sliding around off the spokes when you inflate the tube. Leaving the old one in is a good idea, maybe put the narrower one under it, so the wider one holds it in place.

Changing your own tires - I'm impressed! Do you have your own tire mounting machine? Either way I'm still impressed

esp changing your tires at 10PM on Easter Sunday! When I ride up to the Falls again I'm buying you dinner.

The new strips will cover the spoke nipples but not as wide as the oem strips - the oem pretty well filled the lowerr chanel and the new strip will cover the nipples but with only a 1/4" to spare each side.

The oem strip looks to be in good shape and I'll probably be changing tires before the end of the year.

i'v been putting the oem ones back on for 17 years did a change on the front last month and the strip is still like new, check for loose spokes each season by tapping them and promptly snug the lose ones and your rims will be trouble free for many years, most spoke problems come from neglect or over tightening them, i,v seen the back rim on 650s so lose i could shift the bike left and right about an inch on the hub

How the aych-eeeee-double-hockey-sticks does that happen? I've heard of that happening many times, like someone else paying the bar tab when out drinking with 'friends', but I've never experienced it.
