I cross-threaded the rear cylinder spark plug on my V-Star; the local cycle shop says they can put a Helicoil insert in to solve the problem; they said it is a "very routine" fix.

Has anyone had success or failure with such a repair? Please share your experiences.

I'v done a couple. One on an old 60s Oldmobile with the 215 aluminum engine. Head bolt threads would strip on those simply by looking at them. The other was on a stripped thread on an outboard motor carb. In both cases the repair worked and I was able torque the bolt to spec with no problem.

The kits aren't cheap but if the installer is carefull it will work and is a whole lot cheaper than a new head.

I've had it done on a VW head, done while I waited. No Problems sold it after 50K miles and no problems.

A properly installed Heli-coil should last until overhaul. Always use anti-seize on the threads during assembly.

The folks I have dealt with have had no problem dealing with using helicoil for a fix. Go for it.
