2000 XVS650 failing to shift + Trans diagram & description

Was hoping the 650 and 1100 had similar design. If the bike was run low of oil from not being changed, it may have overheated and seized the shift slider as in the post below and worth checking. Looks like its part of the other thread you mention.
 
I remember in a time long, long ago that my dad would use kerosene as an internal engine degreaser. Just spitballing ideas now.... dont know if it would help your situation or not, but its cheap at about $5/gal. Could you use a heat gun to expand the slider rail to get it freed up.. probably under $20 at Harbor Freight? PB Blaster is a handy penetrating oil. Good luck... your knowledge of the transmission is much better than most.

edit- I also recall reading about a DIY penetrating solution of 50/50 ATF and acetone (caution- acetone is highly flammable and best used outside with no sources of ignition). Dont know if its safe around rubber and seals
