Hi everyone hope your well?

Update on the XVS, so the bikes on the ramp rear wheel off the ground, clutch covers removed and clutch baskets off. When rotating the rear wheel I found the main shaft spinning which tells me the bikes in gear and ok. I hold the main shaft and rotate the wheel and I can feel the gears slipping over and over, obviously the gears havent sync properly.
i then decide to knock the gear selector drum round manually and manage to get it in to first [emoji1360]
So i then rotate the rear when and go up through the gears first to second perfect, second to third perfect third to forth no good it gets stuck between synchros again and i can get it out with out knocking the drum round.
Ok so my diagnosis is ride the bike with 3 gears [emoji16][emoji23] or take the engine out strip down and replace syncros posibbly more [emoji3064][emoji30]

Thoughts on the issue would be great

Similar happened to me. Cruising along in 5th, then it wouldn’t come out. Beat on the shifter until it downshifted and all I got after that was 1-3. Shifting to 4th would give me “neutral”. Rode around for months like that beating the piss out of the engine. Ended up swapping the motor.

Happy New year everyone hope we’re all well?
Stripped my engine down this morning and found my issue, the slider that go’s between 4th and 5th gear is seized. Obviously been a problem for a while causing poor gear selection but unfortunately on my ride it had enough and decided to seize. Ive tried manually moving it by hand but it wont budge.
Plan of attack now is to get a new head set, second hand gears, forks ext and rebuild.

👍🏼

Just seen you message mkeevo
exactly the same fault very annoying the only thing i can guess is poor oil feed to the shaft causing it to seize?
I think once its repaired the best thing it to is run it up the road And work through the gears getTing that oil all around the engine and don’t leave it for long periods sitting.

Very impressive, above my payscale

These guys do the best transmission work on the planet.
Have used them for years.

Is worth getting the transmission undercut if it's out.

Mark will be able to correct the condition that caused the issue as well.

Worth every penny.

I've never ran across or heard about such a thing. The 650 seems alright in the heat, I always shut 'er down if it was hot out and was waiting on a train though.

There's been plenty of discussion thru out the years about oil coolers on air cooled Vstar bikes for years. These air cooled bikes are designed to operate at high engine temps. I live in Houston, commuted in stop and go traffic for hours without any issues. Yes at times seems like you could cook an egg on the engine, but no engine harm with years of doing this.

I live in NW Florida and have a 650 with over 140,000 miles on it. Never had an overheat problem

Hi everyone hope your staying safe?
Little update on the gearbox situation. I decided to get second hand gearbox internals and made the best out of both, i broke the oil strainer stupidly turning the engine case over 🙈 also ordered various gaskets I didn’t get in the gasket set i brought. Final after waiting for some of the parts to be delivered due to Covid issues I’m finally ready to rebuild.
Today i spent the day on the big rebuild and so far so good everything went back together with out any major issues, i have all the gears and considering there’s no oil in it and the engines not turning it felt quite smooth 👌 Ive also got a oil Filler cap temp gauge, probably a total waist of time but lets see how it go’s
Next step, get that engine in her and get it running

Dude, looks like the day job tools came in handy!

I am smart enough to do the work (with help from here! ) , But the $$$ for tools makes it impractical to do myself. Long story, but for health and safety reasons we abandoned our fully owned house and moved into government housing.

Tiny 2 bedroom. I had to leave behind 30 years of collected tools. As well as a large collection of antique video game systems with games and accessories.

And NO engine repair work here. If you can do the job between Friday 5 pm and Monday 6 am you are good. Otherwise, no go. :(

Same issue lost 4th and 5th. But love my bike. I have done so much work to her and man she fast. But she needs love. I'm going to be cracking open the case soon due to the same issue. Where did you find the gasket sets I can't seem to find them. I can only find the top motor gaskets. Also was it difficult to get in and out by yourself? I tore my acl and think this is the best time to get her fixed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Damn, wish I saw thread this earlier. Bike ran into the same problem. Exact same. I just got done getting down to the shifter under the clutch hoping it was that screw but nope. Sounds like it is the same problem. Didn't really have any shifting problems before this. So now what? I am not equipped to do a rebuild. (And I don't want to) Guess I need to get an estimate to do it. Engine has very little miles on it. It did sit for a few years before I bought it and I didn't put a lot of miles on it. I guess I should have change the oil more often just because of that. Nobody know of another way to un stick something like this? Cleaning fluid? Wishful thinking. Thanks for the post it has made the issue very clear. Wish it was a simpler solution.

Hi mate, lost my password and haven’t been on the site for a while 🤦🏻‍♂️ i got my gaskets from www.bike-parts-yam.com they seemed to have everything i needed. I ended up getting second hand gear box parts off eBay. Getting the engine out was a piece off piss but getting it back in was a art if you’ve got bad knees or back i would defiantly get some one to help you. Good luck fella 👍🏼

Probbaly a bit late to reply but i was afraid to move my gear selector with force as I didn’t know the problem, but after removing the engine ext i found if i had shifted it down with a lot of force i probably could of free’d at the side of the road and ridden home with 3 gears instead of waiting 5 hours on the RAC 🤦🏻‍♂️ i had only done 30 miles on my after i brought it off a bloke who had it sitting in his garage for 3 years, exact same situation i think. after my fix i‘ve done about 5/600 miles with no problems. I would advise anyone who has this bike if its not a daily driver have it sit on a bike jack and when you start it in the garage to charge the battery or just to hear it purr run though the gears and get that oil splashing round because if you leave it to long the synchro between 4 and 5th gear will run dry and over heat causing the same problem and costing you 💰
Good luck everyone and rid safe 🤟🏼
