Vstar 950 Slip on exhaust and o2 sensor removal

Hey everyone,

Just installed a V&H slip-on on my 2010 950. Aside from a slight exhaust leak, everything went fine. I have noticed a drastic increase in afterfire in the exhaust. I have a K&N air filter that I'd also like to install, but down here in Memphis it is HOT and I don't want to lean the bike out too much to cause damage due to overheating. I saw in another thread that disconnecting the o2 sensor allows the bike to run richer. Is this the case? Will disconnecting the o2 sensor cause the check engine light to come on? Do you remove the sensor from the exhaust or just unplug it from the harness on the side of the bike? On a bit of a tight budget, so can't really afford a fuel processor right now. Any assistance y'all can provide will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the heads up. Should I be worried about the afterfire with the slip on? It doesnt bother me, I just want to make sure its not damaging anything. (perhaps 'afterfire' is the incorrect term. It's popping when I let off the throttle once the bike has warmed up. no smoke or anything, just popping with the throttle closed at speed. Been a while, but as I recall afterfire is usually indicative of unburnt fuel cooking off in the exhaust, which would indicate a too rich mixture?)

Disconnected the battery but didn't have any impact. Switched from 86 to 93 octane, also no change. Backfire is still present on decel and occasionaly on switching gears. Seems to get more noticeable as the bike warms up. Does not seem to be running any hotter than normal. I should note that I took it in two weeks ago for its yearly service and to have them check on why the bike had begun backfiring (still had stock exhaust at the time). Mechanic said not to worry about it, everything checked out fine. Became more noticeable after switching to the slip on. Sorry if I am beating a dead horse here, but is it damaging anything? Doesnt sound like gun shots, more like small fire crackers
